..reading the NST has become a habit to this old coot..an addictive habit..no matter what other dailies that I have read, (almost all, 'cept for the Chinese and Tamil dailies), I must finished if off with the NST..a day is incomplete without it..seeing that I first begun to read it when I first learned how to read..and that was a lil bit more than 50 years ago..
..pakmat going through Chuan's copy, relaxing in front of his gold shop..
he and his wife were busy preparing paper nuggets of silver and gold..
for the Hungry Ghost Day on the 7th of the 7th month of the Chinese calendar..
..no matter who is helming it, no matter the slant, ( I simply ignored it)..I just continue reading it..for the news that I already knew from Malay dailies which I read earlier in the day, to its features and articles by its regular columnists like Kak Teh and Awang Goneng..they are excellent..and kept me abreast with most things happening around me..I think I became a bit knowledgeable because of it..
I depend on it for general information, on health, lifestyles and trivia..most times I agree with it..sometimes I don't..once I even wrote to it..and saw my letters published..but now I am just content with reading it...
..I loved reading the trivia part..like today..where it claimed that husbands who earn less than their wives are more likely to stray or be unfaithful..apparently there is less tendency for men to stray or be unfaithful if they are earning more than their wives..hmm..they should carry out such studies in Bachok...where generally the women are bringing in the rice packets..with the husbands content to loll about with some cows and goats..
..my wife is earning more than me from her little hair shop..but than, I have done enough straying..

Abe Mat,
My Mama says she's dreaming of one day retiring and living in the kampung like you do. Hmmm...wonder who did the research on the trivia bit. What's the sample size, urban or rural etc etc.... purrr....meow!
Pakmat, I no longer read, listen or watch the MSM and it kept my mind as healthy.
Have a nice day.
Dear PakMat,
I started to buy NST when I was still in primary school. I still remember how I had to keep half of my daily allowance just to buy an English newspaper that I half understood most of the words and sentences. In those days, I realized that my English knowledge was a bit behind to be compared to my other classmates. The inferiority was a challenge to start leaning and reading more English materials. I started by reading NST. After graduating, I applied to NST in Jalan Riong, Bangsar to do my internship and even though I was in the accounts department, I felt really proud to be given the taste of producing this beloved newspaper. But I still prefer the big size papers than the present tabloid size.
only buy NST at home :)
Not only in Bachok, but it happen everywhere in Kelantan. I remember my mother both my grand mothers earn more than thier husband. They are faithful me included . I earn more than her (salary lah side business dia ,I don't know but I havemy share providing her a batter car than me.paying the tel bils, touch n go card etc etc)
MFT
I am a NST addict, like you.
Immaterial what people say, NST is still my paper of choice.
It's been THE paper for the family since grand-pa's time.
I think nst whouldreward us as loyal readers.
But one thing the standard of English has gone done as compared to 30 years ago.
sejak nst saiz kecik ni... penuh dgn iklan je...
salam PakMat
U looking great..
heeeee..
selamat berpuasa dan selamat
menyambung mkn malam..
Pakmat,
When I was teaching, the class used NST for our NIE.I dare not use other papers .I used too the articles to jump start the yearly staff meeting.NST too is my daily bread.Cant miss it even a day.
pakmat - i grew up with nst and berita harian and both remain my papers of choice until today. nst's standard has dwindled unfortunately and its advertising earnings have dipped so much due to still competition, but my loyalty remains. by the way, my reading is not limited to mainstream media only.
oops.. stiff competition...
relek je pak mat baca paper :)
eh ye ke kat bachok, the women are the breadwinners? tapi i curiga pasal trivia tu, i thought men yg loaded, kocek tebal lah yg kuasa nak pasang2 lain ?!
saya suka membaca buah fikiran veteran, sangat berisi :)
Tatak,
NST used to be my staple daily diet. Nowadays I just read selected articles and their Travel Times is still my favorite.
Pakmat, i had seen nst everyday in my living room from the moment i learnt my abc's. I'm not very picky though, nst, star, malay mail... all can but since I moved to Miri few months back, I'm starting to miss all these dailies. The Borneo Post does not have the same appeal... probably cause it doesn't carry stories close to my heart...or home, rather. But 'home' is here now, so I'm feeling a little bit in limbo here... still getting used to the idea, I guess. We manage to get The Star deliverd daily but it comes only after 1pm... who reads the newspaper after 1pm la?? My coffee would be too cold by then *sigh*
..salam you guys...hah..I knew that this newspaper played a prominent part in almost everybody's life..including ours..had a bad feeling that price will go up to 1.50 a copy..hope Chuan the goldsmith will continue buying..:)
my dear cat..but you are welcome to make Bachok your place of retirement..come..keep Ayam company..she will welcome you..gladly..
have a nice day, Pak Idrus..
..can see that you have profited from NST, Ozz..:)
salam June Malik..read whilst on marathon?..
..men in Kelantan, MFT, are generally a contented lot..
..yeah, they should reward us, Miz Lavender..tapi saya jarang beli..baca yang free..:)
..nak hidup, sifu, nak hidup..
..orang tua tahu rileks ajer, ismi..:)..dan jangan caya sangat kata-kata veteran..hehehe..
..I thought so, too, nur..and old man looking great..but you are always looking great yourself..hehehe..
..it will always be my staple, Pak Zawi..
..I knew you read out of mainstream, lady Kama..:)..I do, too, a little..just enough to warm my cranium..
..my daily bread and jam, mokjadendell..:) and ayam, my tabby, sends her regards to mok, jade & dell..she bids them welcome..to Bachok..
..nin, in Bachok we are lucky to get the papers earlier than 8 in the morning..and I usually get to read the days nst at about noon, just before zohor prayers or after..so Bachok is not much different from Miri..
..missing home, huh?..time heals, lady..just you wait..meantime, selamat perpuasa and cheers..
The nst was my dad's paper of choice. So it was very much a part of my life while growing up.
My husband and I were fans of The Star. Yes, 'were'. Now we no longer buy or read the newspapers, and I get my comics-fix online ;)
Pak Mat,
Sorry, I dont know how to write in English. But I'll try my best.....boleh ke ?
Selamat berpuasa Pak Mat.
hi, pat..time was we read both NST and the Star..:) I found reading online not the same..I'm addicted to flipping the pages..and using used paper for starting fires at home..:)
salam Pak Man laksam ..selamat berpuasa, Pak Man..semoga sihat-sihat belaka..bolih doh tu..:)
hehehe, u can tell by the way i write, i don't read much. Just comics & magazine & listen to the radio, waiting for my favourite songs :))I'm a good listener tho.

Tommy
..yes, I can tell that, Tommy, that even though you do not read much, you get by..:)

Salam Pak Mat
I read with interest all these comments and would like to thank everyone for their comments on the NST.
We welcome feedback from our readers to make the paper better.
..thank you, lady FI..we just loved you paper, thats all..
I began reading NST when it was just ST. On Sunday I look forward to the comic pullout. Then I lived at the flat opposite its office at Pudu Road. Since a year back I stopped reading & watching all media due to poor eye sight, occasionally listening to sillything on radio. I missed nothing...
..salam tokcik..I began reading it when it was ST, too..:) and pakmat bid you welcome to the blogging world..:) salam Merdeka..take care of those eyes..
